Course Reflection

1) "In this course i expect to have a better understanding and appreciation of art in our society and how it has influenced people. Without art people would never be able to be express themselves." That is what i wrote in my first blog posting and throughout this course i learned to accept and appreciate all different forms of art in our society. Art will always have a voice in our history.

2) After taking this art course, the term art became opened up for me. I would now define art as anything that makes an impact in our society and has a strong meaning to it.

3) My favorite artist in my original posting i could not find but i recall it was Leonardo Di Vinci. My favorite artist now is Michelangelo because of his magnificent creations that he had that impacted our society forever.

4) My answer is the same as it was from the first blog posting. I have taken multiple online courses in my past semesters at Buffalo State and i actually have two next semester that i will be taking on. This class was very well planned out for an online course.

Self Portrait project

I selected to do a virtual tour powered by Google. The gallery i chose was The Frick Collection in New York City.

1)I selected these inspiration self portraits because when going through all the other virtual art galleries there was nothing that caught my eye except this art collection located in New York City. The first self portrait is called Sir Thomas More by: Hans Holbein the Younger 1527 created with oil on oak panel. The second self portrait is Comtesse d'Haussonville by: Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. The final self portrait i chose was Self portrait  by: Rembrandt Harmensz. These are all the self portraits that stood out to me in all the virtual art galleries.

2) The media i chose to use on my own self portrait was pencil. I chose pencil because it is the tool that i have the most experience with, but i am not the best drawer overall. I like using pencil for media choice because i can erase my mistakes when they happen.

3) A challenge that i came across in this self portrait was that i would find myself making tiny errors and i would have to keep erasing them.  I overcame this challenge by starting to slow my hand down and focus more on where i was drawing.

4) This piece represents me in a positive way. When i look at the myself i see a man with a positive attitude and happy all the time.

5) Some elements and principals i applied in my self portrait were line, value, emphasis, and shape.

6) I enjoyed working on this art project because the last time i drew myself was back in middle school art class. It was nice to see how i improved over the years even though i am still a bad drawer.

7) I think my final art work is decent because you can relate it to the picture. The only thing i am unhappy about is that i am just not a good drawer like my older brother. I feel that i did better than i usually do.

Art critique reflection Project 5

1. Which projects did you review?
I reviewed Amanda Bolibrzuch art exhibit "Architectural Creations Throughout the World"

2. Why did you select the Exhibit you critiqued?
I selected this exhibit to critique because architecture is a topic that we did not really spend enough time on and the theme caught my eye immediately when i looked at the title of the exhibit. Amanda displayed a lot of different architectures that can be found world wide.

3. What challenges did you face in writing the critique article and how did you overcome them?
The challenges that i faced when critiquing this art exhibit was how to find the emotional meaning in interpreting the exhibit and using bracketing to find memories for example. I overcame this obstacle by clearing my mind and just looking back into my past for the memory and to find the emotional factor i just had to think about how other people would view these architectures.

4. How do you feel about critiquing your peers work?
I feel like it was a lesson to critique someones work because this was the first time i had ever critiqued and i found it enjoyable. It was a great learning experience.

5. Would you like to read the critique your peers wrote about your Art Curation Project?
I would most definitely like to read what others wrote about mine because i want to know how well they think i did and look at the suggestions they gave me to fix it up.

6. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your finished article and why?
I would rate my article about a 8.5 - 9 because even though it was my first critique i felt that by watching the videos helped me a lot. I found my self to grasp the critique concept quickly.

7. Did you enjoy working on this project?
I did enjoy working on this project because it was a personal test to see if i was able to create my own personal art exhibit. Also it was a test to see if i was able to critique well for the first time ever.

Video blog review week 15

Jackson Pollock
This video introduced concepts of art criticism by discussing Pollock, he was a master and yet also used to describe a low point in modern art.  The film included a detailed discussion of the work "Lavender Mist," a controversial abstract painting.  This video kind of related to my final art project, but i i got some feedback it seemed like. This video was really good and it added depth to art  criticism for me.

The Critics: The Story from the Inside Page
This video took an interesting side on art criticism by comparing critics to reporters.  For example, music reporters might report on how the audience reacts to a concert, just as an art critic takes in the big picture beyond the artwork, including how the artwork affects the viewer.  This related to my art project because it shows how relevant art critics can be inside of an art museum. This video was the best one that watched out of all of them and this video added depth to my understanding of art criticism because in this video i learned the most about art critics.

Greenberg on Art Criticism
In this video, Greenburg relates art criticism to music criticism, pointing out that music is easier to critique due to the way musicians show their own music.  Art is harder to be subjective about when it comes to criticism because you never know what art is going to bring you and who is going to criticize it. This video gave me a criticism perspective so i related to this to my project by someone criticizing my work. This video was good and it kept my attention the whole time watching it and it added just a little bit more depth of art criticism for me.

An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance
This video was different from any we have viewed because inside the video it showed me a "skit".  The main message of the film was that all art inspires more art.  This relates to my project because it is showing me on how to find inspiration and it was hard to find it for this project, but i accomplished my goal. This video was interesting because it had a skit in it which i found really interesting. It added so much more depth for me to art criticism for me.

The Colonial Encounter: Views of Non-Western Art and Culture

This video discusses the sexual exploitation of indigenous women and views of non-western art and culture throughout this video.  This video did not really relate to my project because i used about all western art which is the opposite of this video, but the video was still informative for me. This video was pretty cool to watch because i got to learn a little more about non-western art, and it seemed to be a brief subject throughout the semester. Also added depth to art criticism for me.

Greenberg on Pollock
This video talks and discusses the artwork of Jackson Pollock. Pollock rejected the easel, yet used it throughout his career because it was a great tool even though he did not like it so much. The video also explained the times when artwork is not easy on the human eye.  This video related to my project because when choosing my artworks i found some that might be appealing to the human eye, but i stuck them in anyways.  This video was a good watch but this did not really add depth to understanding of art criticism.

Reflection of final art project

I started this project by going on random websites and searching for paintings on love because the databases in the course resources on helped me a little bit.  My research of the paintings was very tedious and this took a lot of time to complete. I found that after i chosen all the works of art that i did, i would be able to get this project on the road for completion. Once I had all of my paintings chosen, I started to work on my powerpoint.I tried a few different backgrounds, but i did not like the majority of them, so i kept it simple. I wanted a plain background with a neutral color so it would not draw attention away from from the artwork. I can't explain the order chosen for the paintings except my first and last one because i found them to be the most attention grabbing. I hope you like this final project result, it took a lot of time to complete.

Video blog review week 13 and 14

Video 1- The Lowdown on Lowbrow:West Coast Pop Art
1. This video talks about lowbrow artwork. This video talks about different parts of lowbrow and the times in history and it had a large influence on the art community.
2. The video did not really relate to my art exhibition project. Lowbrow is everywhere and seems to be unorganized. My art project will be a lot more organized i believe.
3. From this video, I learned something new; I learned what lowbrow is and what it influence, but i feel it did not help me for my project.

Video 2- Displaying Modern Art: The Tate Approach
1. This video discusses how museums used to be set up and how it started to change in the 1970s and so on. It talks about Tate's thematic approach to displaying art which i found to be cool.
2. This video did relate to my art exhibition because we have to set it up as if it were in a museum, but  I feel this gave me look because of the aspect of it.
3. This video showed me more about museums and also by thinking differently on how to set up my project.

Video 3- Bones of Contention: Native American Archeology
1. This video talks about the question to whether Native American remains that were found by us should be returned to their ancestors or not because they are relics to our culture.new laws like Grave Protection and Repatriation Act which i found to be very interesting to learn about.
2. This video did not really add to my project because it talked more about the Native Americans rather than an art exhibit.
3. This video really did not add to my understanding for my art project.

Video 4- George Eastman House: Picture Perfect
1. This video shows curators and archivists at Eastman's colonial revival mansion and how it is the oldest photography museum in the world which i actually found to be pretty awesome because i had no idea that this museum even existed.
2. The video related to my project in the fact that it shows inside the museum and how one looks all set up accordingly.
3. Other than seeing the inside of a museum, this video did not really add anything to my project.

Video blog review week 12

Hockney on Photography : I watched this video because I like photography and i think it is an alternative way to create art. The part I found most interesting to learn about in this video is how a  void between the photographer and the subject can be so significant.  I also enjoyed Hockney’s Polaroid collages because they looked really interesting.  I really liked this video because it let me  understand what was going on inside the artist’s head while he was creating the art   In fact, this video discussed the artist’s entire life, which was interesting to relate to his artwork.  I think this video most related to what we learned about photography earlier in the semester when learning about the history of art. This video can relate to the text a little bit because the text tells you about photography, but this video does a lot better job describing it for me.

Uncertainty: Modernity and Art: I watched this video because it seemed like I would be able to relate to the art in modernity. This video was really informative for me.  The video suggested that art can tell us about ourselves because it is always good to know about yourself. It started by discussing Greek statues, which mainly referenced divinity and “knowing thyself.” which i found really interesting because i didn't know this was thought of in Greek times The main point of this video is that uncertainty is the underlying message of modern art – everything is always changing.  I thought this video was going by fast because it kept my attention so much. This relates to the text somewhat once again because the text only tells me a little bit of modernity and i found it boring to read about, but when i was watching this video i found it so much more interesting.

Isamu Noguchi: The Sculpture of Spaces: I chose to watch this video because I am i wanted to learn more about spaces and the fact that sculptures were part of it made me want to watch it more.  I agree with his idea that the earth itself will someday be the subject of sculpture because it is so important to us.  I thought it was interesting that Noguchi started off by creating stage sets like a small world and i found that pretty cool.  My favorite work featured in the video was his water sculpture. This relates to the text because it gives me a better understanding of spaces and it was more interesting to visually learn.

Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the 50s and 60s: I chose to watch this video because pop art has always stuck out to me and i wanted to learn about it in this time period.  I learned that pop art, such as Andy Warhol’s, was the first to embrace the rhythms and textures of city life. My favorite Andy Warhol artwork is the campbell soup one because i always liked the soup growing up and he has been such an influence in the pop art world.   The video also explains how “Girl with Hair Ribbon” by Lichtenstein describes surprise. This video barley relates to the text because i did not get to learn a lot about pop art in the 50s and 60s, but in this video i learned so much more about pop art than i did in my whole life.

Art Gallery Visit #2

The Exhibition:
1. The title of this exhibit was Art Craft in Media 2011.
2. The theme of this exhibit was craft models that can be made by hand i thought.

The Gallery:

1. The lighting that was used seemed to bright white light with little to no shadow that made the room look intriguing to me. The lighting was arranged evenly on the ceiling which distributed the bright white light evenly in the area of the exhibit. Although there was emphasis of the lighting coming out of a few works of art on the wall.
2. The walls in this art gallery were all white and there were no other colors to be seen.

3. The materials that were used in the interior architecture of space were a circular bench i saw in a different room. Also in the picture above it that strip in the middle is rising rust that is happening slowly and it looked like a carpet to me. I felt the need to touch it just to check.

4. The floor plan set up a pretty smooth movement, it flowed in one direction to lead you through the gallery. The viewers seemed to be moving at all times because of all the interesting works that were placed in this exhibit.

The Artwork :

1. In this art exhibit the artworks were organized in a pretty cool way. For example that rust strip that i thought was a carpet was the only piece of work that seemed to be different amongst the rest. All of the other artworks were organized in a odd but cool pattern.

2. These artworks were similar in ways because they all were crafts and they were created by hand and stood out for the meaning to be appreciated for what they are. They are also similar because they all were part of the same exhibit.

3. These artworks were different because they all were created by different types of materials and had certain values that were different from others.

4. The majority of these artworks were framed all in glass cases mainly so people could not touch them.

5. The artworks were identified and labeled on a white box next to the artwork with the name of the artwork and the artist in that white box.

6. The proximity of the artwork was spaced in different parts and was arranged in anyway that the creators wanted to do it. Some were a close walk and some were a far walk.

Art Criticism:

1. The first artwork that i selected was called Surrogate (monkey/topiary), 2011 by Bethany Krull. It seems that this artwork was created with porcelain and paper. I have never heard of porcelain, but it made this monkey hugging this tree have a lot more emphasis and it stood out to me more. This was the first art work that grabbed my attention because i always liked monkeys and the monkey looks so small compared to the tree so i was contemplating why this was occurring. This reminds me of a someone trying to take a nap under a tree and i really enjoyed this work of art a lot. Some art elements or principals i notice in this are shape, emphasis, and value.

2. This was the second artwork that i had chosen to write about from this art exhibit and it is called MC #10, 2010 by Jozef Bajus. I chose this artwork because when i first came across it in the museum i was confused to what it what until i read what it was made of and looked at it completely. This was made with mixed objects such as paper, tape, and a mirror found on the bottom. The mirror was the hard part to notice, but when i did i realized that it gave a cool reflection and it showed a patter of a diamond in the middle. This got my mind going for a few minuets and i enjoyed it a lot. This was very creative and i hope to see more of these in the future. Some art elements or principals i notice with this work of art is color, proportion, and balance.

3. This is my third work of art i selected from the exhibit and it is called Rooster, 2010 by Stephanie Brash. This work of art was created with wood fired ceramic. This rooster kind of looked like a trophy to me at first when i was walking by it, but when i approached it i started analyzing it more and realized it was more than just a normal rooster. The lighting that is surrounding this rooster gives it a nice shadow that i think looks like one of those baskets with a snake coming out of it. There is great detail to this and i enjoyed examining it for what it was and not just walking by it saying whatever. Some art elements or principals i notice with this work of art is texture, color, and value.

What did you think of visiting the Gallery and purposefully looking at the exhibition from a different perspective - the physical space, the architecture, theme, etc.?

Going to visit an art gallery for me is usually boring and it is just an assignment. But this one was a different experience. I got to see actual works of art that meant something to people and they really put their time and effort into it. My perspective on going to art exhibits after this one has changed because i get to see more of what's actually out there now.

Video blog review week 11

Dance at the Moulin de la Galete

1. I chose this video because it had an interesting name and i wanted to learn more about it.
2. This video discussed Renoir's life  and talks about his idealism with his real life of poverty and radicalism that shows how he created this piece because of the description of his life and how it led into his work.
3. This video helped more that the text because it actually talked about Renoir's life and the things he went through.
4. I liked watching this film. i found it pretty cool to learn about someones elses life more in depth instead of reading it from a textbook.

Matisse and Picasso

1. I chose this video because I personally like Picasso's work because he has been influential in the art society and wanted to learn more about him, and I also did not know a lot about Matisse and i wanted to learn more about him.
2. This video talks about the relationship that was shared between Matisse and Picasso and also their works of art they created. The video emphasizes both the artists collection and the lives of both artists which is important to learn.
3. This video gave me a better outlook on the times and examples of both Picasso and Matisse's work because it showed their actually perspectives instead of a textbook telling me about it.
4. I liked this video because I was able to see artwork from both artists that i never learned in the past growing up.

The Impact of Cubism

1. I chose this video because Cubism has always been an interesting topic for me because it seems mysterious and there is still so much more to learn about it.
2. This video discusses Cubism and how it influenced Europe. It discusses the nonclassical ways to show space and form because cubism is different than other styles of art.
3. This video was better than the text because it showed me hat Cubism actually is and how it changed art within Europe. Cubism also is still changing today i think.
4. I like this video because it showed me a new type of artwork that i barley understood and i wanted to learn more about and I enjoyed this because i found it very interesting to learn.

Dada and Surrealism

1. I chose this video because the Dada movement and Surrealism seemed to be too vague for me in the text so i wanted to learn more about it.
2. This video discusses the Dada movement and how it translated into Surrealism and how it changed art by showing examples in Europe.
3. This video gave me a better understanding than the text on these movements because it showed actual examples of artwork.
4. I liked this video because i got a better understanding of what Surrealism actually is and i know more about it now.

Mask Project

This is a picture of a Aztec mask. The Aztec have always been very creative with the way they have made their masks since their time. They can represent happiness or fear. To me this one may have looked scary, but i like it because it's green and gives it a goofy type of look. This mask shows emphasis because it looks like the teeth are bulging out at you.

This is a mask from a holloween classic called Scream. This mask has been symbolic since the movie has first came out, this mask has been used in holloween every year and has meant something. Thank god the Aztecs showed us what a mask can do to people. I like this mask because it shows shape because the shape of this mask makes it different from your traditional mask.

This is a mask from mardi gras. These are traditionally found in New Orleans during Mardi Gras and it symbolic during the time of the year that it is happening. This mask shows shape and proportion because it is balanced and shows how even it is. I like this picture because i am a fan of mardi gras and the holiday means a lot to me and this a traditional mask for the holiday.

This is my sketch of my mask that i wanted to create. My plan was to add color and value as i finished the mask because i wanted to make it stand out and look different from a typical mask.

This is my final mask and i found it to be an enjoyable project. I think this because i was able to give my mask color and emphasis to make it stand out from a normal mask. I personally think that my mask may look like a baby lion but that is just me. I am glad that i got to do this project and was able to explore a different type of art.

Video blog review week 10

1) African Art: Legacy of Oppression
- I chose this video because the title seemed to have kind of a strong meaning to it and i wanted to see what it was all about.
- This video talks about Belgiums Tervuren Museum. It talked about and showed examples of African artwork from more than 250 different cultures. These cultures shape the art meaning in African culture.
- This video is related to the text because even though video just had more information that shows pieces of artwork from different cultures, some of the information was similar in the text.
- I liked this video because it gave me additional knowledge to help me get the whole picture on African art.

2) Buddhism
- I chose this video because I always see Buddhas in movies, but i never really know what their all about so that is how i wanted to learn more about this topic.
- This video talked about the beginning of Buddhism and its use of architecture and art. The concepts of architecture and art in Buddhism shapes their religion and makes them who they are.
- This video relates to the text because even though the video showed me some real examples of Buddhism arichtecture and went into detail explaining it, the text talks a little bit about their architecture and artworks in the text.
- I liked this video because it shows me good examples of Buddhism architecure which helped m picture it better because it was better to see their architecture in a video instead of a book with pictures.

3) Hinduism
- I chose this video because Hinduism is a religion that i am not an expert on and after reading about it i wanted to understand it more.
- This video talked about the practice of Hinduism through the use of architecture and art in India because architecture and art are improtant concepts in that area.
- This video related to the text because it somethings in the text and video were similar, but i thought that the video gave me more information.
- I liked This video game me a better idea of what Hinduism is all about and show me real life examples.

4) African Art
- I chose this video because it is about African Art and even after reading the book I still kind of understood it, but i wanted to learn more on what i read in the text.
- This video looked at different aspects of African Art like symbolism, aesthetics and the functionality. Religious beliefs were also mentioned in this video.
- This video related to the text because it talks about the same information in a different perspective, but the information in the video was more meaningful because i did not get bored watching it.
- I liked this video because it help me visually understand African Art. This cleared up African Topics and help me understand and see their beliefs.

Hand drawing art project

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?
At the start i thought this project was going to be fairly easy because my hands are right in front of me and i thought it would be really simple. I was mistaken because i am not the best of drawers, there is a reason why i am not an art major. Although when i completed it, the drawings of my hands looked pretty realistic.

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?
I selected pencil because it is just an easier tool to use and i have used it all of my life and it is easier for me to shade and make lines darker when using a pencil. I never have used charcoal and did not have access to it, so i decided to stick with my handy pencil.

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?
I thought it was going to be easy, but i actually realized that my non-dominant hand is not as steady or accurate as my right hand. Doing that light shading was the hardest part i thought, i also thought the shading was difficult for me for my dominant hand as well. I actually can write with my left hand though.

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?
Both pictures were tough and not that good i thought. My dominant hand gave more detail to the outline of my hand, I could make the lines accurately, and i was able to shade better with my dominant hand.  However with my non-dominant hand I had rigid lines i think and  lines and my fingertips looked a lot more different than my dominant right hand. The main difference in the two is that in my non-dominant hand (left hand) the fingers look funky.

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?
No because my right hand is a lot more steady and a lot more accurate. Holding the pencil in my left hand was rough because sometimes i would fumble it around because i am not a custom to using my left hand.

Video blog review week 9

1. I chose Leonardo da Vinci because he is one of the most well known artists and the works of art that he created have impacted our society. I chose to watch The Drawings of Michelangelo because his works have always had meaning to the public and he had a great impact on history. I also chose to watch I chose to watch Velazquez growing up but i had no idea what it was so i thought it would be interesting to watch. The final video i watched was Albrecht Durer: Image of a Master because I really never heard of him before and I was intrigued to find out what he stood for and to see what kind of artwork he created.

2. -In the video Leonardo da Vinici, it really gave me a better look into his life and how he grew to be one of the most famous artists in our history. He really is considered a "Renaissance man".
-In The Drawings of Michelangelo, it was interesting to see how Michelangelo would sketch to get an idea of the space and shapes. He was able to show volume and mass in his drawings to express how he felt as he was drawing. Since he is also a sculptor in his drawings, he makes the men looked defined and big. This video did a good job showing Michenlangelo's tools and techniques that he used to create all of his great works of art.
-In Velazquez I found it to be really interesting. I didn't even realize that  He could really paint the emotions of the royals. He also painted Greek Mythology which i find really cool because i always liked greek mythology but it was rare for spanish artists to do greek mythology. He ended up one of the greatest painters from Spain.
-The final video Albrecht Durer: Image of a master, this video really showed us how Durer was a great artist and gave me a better idea of what art was like in Northern Renaissance. He had many influences in his life.

3. The videos relate to the text because they explained very well the lives of the artists they had during their times periods. We read about in the book for example middle ages with the gothic arts, early renaissance to the high renaissance. We were able to see the influences from the period and how the artists grew to be famous artist, but with the videos it gave us a better understanding of how these artists emerged.

4. These videos gave me a greater understanding to the concepts that i have  read about because I was able to see a different side of the artists instead of just researching their works, where they came from, how they grew up wiithin that time period and what was going on in the world because different types of art emerged at different points in history. It gives additional information in a more entertaining way that helps me actually see and picture everything better instead of just reading about it in a book and trying to picture it in my head

Video blog review week 8

1. Explain why you selected each of the three videos you choose from the selection listed above AND
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned AND
3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The three video's I watched were: Cairo Museum, A World Inscribed: The Illuminated Manuscript, and Cataclysm: The Black Death Visits Tuscany.

A World Inscribed- I chose this video because by looking at the name to me it meant it was going to tell me something interesting by watching it. I loved it and could not turn it off. The key concept was about the production of manuscripts and books, who created them, and how long they took. It was cool to learn that monks were the ones who created these and also about the amount of time and work that went into these but they came out amazing. I don't think i would ever have the time or patience to complete something like this.
This video related to our readings this week because it helped me understand art from the middle ages and i was a fan of the middle ages area in school, so that made me like it more.

Cairo Museum- I chose this video because I like museums and i wanted to watch a video that was museum related. The key concepts were about the museum and all of the ancient artifacts inside it. got to learn that this museum is so large that they only show sections of at a time. I also learned that they relocated mummies so they could be near this museum which was cool as well, this video also helps with the understanding of how they preserve artifacts because it  was interesting to know how people were able to know how to do that so long ago.
This video relates to our reading this week because it helps us understand the different types of materials that people used during that time era, and i found it to be really awesome.

Cataclysm: The Black Death Visits Tuscany- I chose this video because to me it basically told a story which  i found interesting and it kept my mind attached to it. The key concepts in this video were how the plague which was catastrophic and was transferred from an old place to a new place, how many works of art would be left never finished, how artist would now start becoming more interested in the "Divine World" and not so much the "Natural". This became one of the reasons for the start of the Renaissance.
This video relates to our readings this week because again it helps talk  about art during the renaissance period.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I enjoyed watching all of these video's  because they help me understand our readings much more especially if I don't understand something. I have to say my favorite was Cairo Museum because i got to understand more about the mummy era and and how they were preserved and relocated. I always found that kind of stuff to be very interesting to me.

video blog review week 7

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Video 1- Prairie Style
From this video I had learned about Frank Lloyd Wright and his new design of prairie style homes.  Wright used an open floor plan for his home which was found to be rare in that time era. Also Wright designed the homes based off of the elements ex: the sun follows the house during the day and follows it while it sets.

Video 2- Architecture: The Science of Design
I learned how architects can create skyscrappers and test them against the wind speeds to make sure they can withstand them. I also learned how they use concrete and by the way concrete can reinforce itself because it is so mushy if it has not hardened yet.

Video 3- Classical Architecture
From this video I learned about the becoming of architecture throughout Greece and Rome, it all was started from some type of art form. The Greeks and Romans also used art elements and principals within their work.

Video 4- Frank Gehry: Architecture as Art
From this video I learned how Gehry evokes emotional responses from the viewers with his buildings. It was cool how Gehry talked about how buildings have evolved over time depending on how they have been used and taken care of. Frank Gehry attempts to form a connection between culture, the bulidings, and art history.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
All of these videos give us real life examples to help us understand what we have already read in the textbook. By watching the videos we can see what we read come to life in a way in multiple ways and also by seeing how architecture techniques and technology have changed over time.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?

The films help me better understand what I have read. While reading the text it was hard to picture some of the things without real moving example, but the way that the films showed this made me understand the concepts more. The videos give us a easier understanding of how architects think and create in an artistic way.

4. From the group of four that you had a choice: Why did you choose that film?

I chose to watch Frank Gehry: Architecture as Art, because I am interested in the art and creativity behind architecture because art and creativity are the core concepts to understand to become a great artist. I like seeing how architecture itself creates buildings and having human responses attached with it.

Art Instillation Project

 Reflection questions:
A. Installation art is a modified space in which the viewer can enter and experience the artwork.
B. There are no set materials used in installation art. An artist can pretty much use any object.
C. Artists create installations because they want to evoke feelings and emotions in the viewer. The idea of an installation is to change the space in a room to create different feelings.
D. The installation I found most interesting is from the book, Jumbo Spoons and Big Cake by Thomas Hirchhorn. Its crazy and all over the place. As a viewer I wish i knew where to tackle this topic for this.

My Plan:
1) An installation piece that gives me the inspiration is Jumbo Spoons and Big Cake by Thomas Hirschhorn (like I used in Reflect: D). I like how it is just all jumbled and scattered it looks interesting to me.

2) The theme that grabbed my attention and that i was to do is Looking Outward: Here and Now.

3) The mterials i will be using is everything in my room to make it all look all scattered and give it the look that something needs to be done.

4) My instillation will take place in my room because it looks like that there needs to be something done with it and you cannot find a single thing in it.

4. Describe your installation.
My instillation takes place in my room actually. There is many cloths on the ground all garbage in one part of the room then there is te]he big tv and gaming chair. Everything is just a mess on the ground but my Tv is the nicest part of it all.

5. Analyze your installation.
An element that i had used was color because you can tell that in the pile of cloths there is distictions of what the colors are and even some of them stand out. My instillation places emphasis on the clothes in the room and the Tv.

6. What are your thoughts on the planning and creation of a site specific installation?
I wanted to create an installation with the theme Looking Outward:The Here and Now. I wanted it to feel busy for the person at home and for the viewer to be able to see what a mess can come out of someones room if they keep forgetting to do it. The viewer shouldn't really know where to start. I had no idea what to do at first but when i got going it became easier.

2. When looking at Project #1: (Elements and Principles), did you agree with the element or principle the artist listed with the images? Did you see other elements and principles in the images?

I agree with the images chosen to represent the elements and principles in both blogs. One example of a picture representing more than one element is in the second blog I chose by Lola Jenkins, there is a picture of multiple water bottles and she chosen the picture for just one of the elements but i say many, it is probably because every viewer has their own perspective.

3. When looking at Project #2: Where there any images in the Peer Blogs the same as your own? If yes, what were they? Where the reasons the image was selected the same or different as your own?

An image that katie and myself had in common was the Campbell soup picture by Any Warhol. We probably have chosen the same image because of the history of it by the name and the fact that it looks really awesome and has rhythm in it.

4. Where there any images that your Peers selected that pique your interest now? If yes, what are they and what is your connection with them? What would you want to know about them?

There was an image that the first student chose took my piqued my interest and it was Kat Rondinells' picture of that fruit. My connection with that picture is that the fruit just looks so tasty and it seems that the juices are glistening right off of it and it makes me want to eat it more. I would like to know how she got that picture to be so detailed.

5. What do you think about the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning?

I found doing the peer reviews to be valuable because it gives me insight to different perceptions and ideas on artwork. I also find it cool to see other peoples perspectives besides my own because it gives me a sense of what other people are thinking too.

6. Check your Blog and read comments posted by your Peers. Do you find their comments helpful?

No one has commented by blog yet.

VIdeo Blog Review Week 6

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

In "Glass and Ceramics" I learned the science on how to create glass art pieces. I never realized glass blowing was exactly that, blowing into a pipe with glass on the end, and it inflates the glass. I also learned that the qualitt of raw materialsused and the temperature used is what differentiates the different types of ceramics. I found it interesting that they are using ceramics in the medical field for things like hip prosthetics. I find it amazing how ceramics are so much more stronger than steel.
In "Installation Art" I learned that an installationg is more than just a sculpture or a 3D piece. It can be many different things like a whole building or even music. Artists can manipulate our perceptions and even space. It is pretty amazing
In "Through the eyes of the sculpture" I learned about different types of stone and what a quarry is. It was interesting to see that there are jobs as scupltures out there, it's not like they just create sculptures for themselves that maybe put in an art museum. Its an actual job. They can be hired for restorations, they can build things like actual buidlings, bridges, fountains etc. It was interesting to see that he made impressions to be able to create a statue with deal

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

These videos relate to the readings from the text by showing examples and visuals of how installments, glass, ceramics and other crafts are created. These 3 things in these videos are used in everyday life for craftsman and for them. These videos were very informative to me and went more into depth than the text did i thought.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?

These films gave me a more knowledgeable understanding of artists who create sculptures, installments and crafts. The videos let me visually see what I read and also by showing me how things are made and different things that artist can do with each topic. The videos were a better understanding than the text by far.

Albright Knox Visit

Today i made a trip to the Albright Knox for this art project. I never have been there before and my original plan was just to do the assignment quick and get out, but i actually spent a lot more time there because i found it to be really awesome. It was really awesome to see real masterpieces in person than a textbook for once, i cant even remember the last time i went to an art museum until today. The pictures i will be discussing are listed below.

A) Which artworks made an impression on me?
The first artwork that made an impression on me was Endless Victory (2005) by John F. Simon Jr. This had an impression on me because it was electronic and was non-stop moving at all times. To me it seemed like a city because the little rectangles were moving at all times and reminded me of the city. This was a good impression for me.

The second artwork that made an impression on me was The Anguish of Departure (1913-14) by Giorgio de Chirico. This artwork had an impression on me because it reminded of a house in the middle east and the house was meant to produce oil for the middle eastern countries. I had my eye on this one for quite sometimes trying to figure out what it meant to me and this is what it meant to me.

The Final artwork that made an impression on me was Diving Tower (1994) by Thomas Demand. This had an impression on me because it honestly looked like the diving boards were jumping out at me and the detail in it is incredible. It really got me to think if i could create something like that.

B) What artworks do i feel i had a connection with?

The first piece of art that i felt i had a connection with was Nomad (1963) by James Rosenquist. I felt a connection with the piece because i always like oil paintings, they tend to stand out to me more. This one seemed so abstract and intriguing and with all the tools on the ground in front of the artwork, i somewhat felt like that i was the one that may have created this.

Another piece of work that i felt that i had a connection with was 100 cans (1962) by Any Warhol. This piece is very well know throughout the world. I felt my connection with this was the fact that i love campbell soup and to see 100 cans of them it made hungry and wanted to go make some.

The final piece of work that i felt i had a connection with was Lancaster (1921) by Charles Demuth.  My first thoughts on this were that my hometown is Lancaster, Ny and with the art being called Lancaster made me like it immediately. Another connection i had with this piece was that it reminded me of a prison with high security and my major is criminal justice major and prisons are intriguing to me because thats what i thought this art was.

C) Which artworks would you like to know more about?

The first artwork that i would like to know more about was Ten Formal Fingers (1961) by Jim Dine.  I would like to know more about this one because when i was looking at this, i was first wondering where is the hand to this and why aren't the fingers split into groups of 5 because there are 2 hands on a person. I also wanted to know why they were girls fingers because of the nail polish.

The second artwork that i wanted to know more about was Magnum Opus II (1991) by Laurie Simmons. This one had me confused because i was wondering why legs were coming out of all the objects. All the legs were in different poses and made me wonder what this all meant together. I really wanted to know why the one pair of legs was hanging up in the air on a globe.

The final artwork that i wanted to know more about was Senor With Guitar (1914) by (sorry picture was blurry i could not make out name). I first was wondering why this person was by himself with his guitar with no one around him. He seemed to be lonely playing his music by himself. I was actually wondering what song he was playing. Finally i really wanted to know why there was no color to this artwork.

Logo Design

1. Discuss what you thought about creating your logo.
My first thoughts about creating this logo was to create something that i like and would be eye appealing to the public.

2. Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in the logo creation?
When i was first brainstorming this project. I was thinking about what do i like to for fun. My favorite thing to do is snowboard and i go Kissing Bridge hence the "KB" part of my logo and i wanted to see how i could do for creating a logo that i would find enjoyable. It was interesting to see how my sketches progressed and new ideas started to form as i kept redrawing the picture over and over through every sketch. My first sketch looks nothing like my first one at all, but i am extremely satisfied with my final logo i might even send it in because it gives the winter theme, both ski and snowboard on the logo and the snow guns on the side to signify the snowfall.

3. What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?
The most important discovery that i have made when creating this logo were the new spontaneous ideas that were coming to me as i was doing all f my sketches.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, powerpoint, and reading material for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
The most important thing I learned from watching the video "graphic:What's in a Logo?" is the process for a company takes to create a logo. There is a long process that takes place with all the brainstorming and the creation of the logo and all the sketches. The final result sums up the business and is appealing to others.

1) When creating the color wheel i found it a lot more easier because it was so basic and so easy to do by just mixing colors and making a color wheel. Making the value scale was annoying to me because i was feared that i was not shading hard enough.

2) I enjoyed with the paint because paint is so much fun and neat to work with. When i was done with the wheel i painted a stupid picture afterward.

3) The most important discovery i made about the color wheel was by mixing the the colors together, it was awesome how it made a brand new color. The most interesting thing i found with the value scale was when i was done i could actually see the value dropping from dark to light.

4) I found that the videos helped in the understanding of the project and gave me some groundwork on what to do. It is cool to see the transitions of the value and how the mixing of 2 colors can make a new one. The most important thing i learned on the videos was how you can mix certain colors to make certain new colors it was real interesting.

First project blog on slideshow

4. Create a Blog Posting for the reflection journal on the creative and technical processes you followed. Be sure to embed your slideshow into your Blog posting.

This project was actually kind of difficult at first i thought. I over thought the entire project and was lost for a little bit and when i finally realized what i needed to do it became so much clear. I took pictures that i thought fit into these elements and principle and by using the creativity of my camera skills i thought it turned out awesome. I first wrote down what objects would fit into these categories then i took the pictures of them. Overall this project was not too hard in the end and i actually found it fun and enjoyable. Also i understand the art elements and principles a lot more now.

Third Blog post on color and emotion

1)  There have been studies that have demonstrated that color affects a wide range of psychological and physiological responses. Blue surroundings will significantly lower a person's blood pressure, pulse and respiration. The color red is believed to increase your appetite appetite. The color "passive pink" has a calming effect which can calm you when your tensed up.

2) The theoretical aspect of color that intrigues me the most is that the color red is believed to increase appetite which means i can eat more food theoretically. After finding that theory i now understand why the steakhouse i work as has 2 of the 3 rooms red and the outside of the building is red. I had always heard that color may affect emotions and physiological responses but I never knew specifics about each color. After learning about this color, i now think of restaurants and their use of color schemes when i go there.

3) In the color video, at one point Junaw was back in London and she was trying to recreate a painting that she had seen in Venice; she had used a lot of dark reds and oranges for the building on the left with the man outside of it on the boat. I felt like the left side of the painting was violent and evil. I felt worried for the man on the boat in the painting.

4) In the feelings video, I had liked  Goya's paintings. The paintings from when he was in his mid 40s and later were extremely dark and devil like. it was a little scary to look at, the people in the paintings looked dead or something. There was no light so it seemed like there was no way out. These paintings seemed to be very violent. I could see and almost feel the badness inside of these paintings.

Second Blog on movies

1) There were key concepts found in each of these videos i have watched. A main key concept that i noticed was that aesthetics was the main topic of both videos. I learned that aesthetics was a philosophical study of art and beauty. Another key thing that i had learned was from the CARTA video and i learned how your brain and neurological system has an effect on how you interpret certain things, for example works of art and visual arts.

2) From this video i felt that Aristotle theory on aesthetics was the most important. Aristotle was Plato's' apprentice and he was a Greek philosopher from the  before Christ era. Aristotle's' most important contribution to the aesthetic theory was that he composed "The Poetics". It was very simple and very influential to everyone. He also analyzed tragedy rather than beauty. Specific rules from tragedy that he created were the unity of action, which was tragedy should represent a single action with no sub plot. The second one was unity of time, which the time frame of the plot did not exceed 24 hours. The final one was unity of place, which the action of the play took place in the same location.

3) I actually enjoyed listening to Changeux and Ramachandran watching/listening to their points on the scientific view of aesthetics. Changeux was telling us that as we evolved our art did nd with aesthetic efficiancy it effects our emotions. Ramachandran was telling us from a scientific view point that our brain brings us our aesthetic viewpoints, that is what i got from his part. From Ramachandran the most interesting thing that i learned was how our minds get the "jolt" sensation when we figure out those mind puzzles. For example Ramachandran used the dolmation test and i took me and i paused the video to try and find the object and after about 15 seconds i got the "jolt" of excitment that i figured out that there was something hiding in the puzzle. The most interesting thing i learned from Changeaux's part of the lecutre was how he showed that through evolution our minds became more creative and our art styles have evolved as we evolved. I deffinatley enjoyed Ramachandran lecture more because he was more enthusiastic, funny, and kept my mind going the whole time with his examples that he shared with us.

4) The videos and our readings relate to eachother by the fact that they both were discussing art. The lectures on aesthetics were a great contribution to increase my learning of the topic and art.

5) My opinion the films were that the first one was talking too much about history and was boring me at points were i wanted to turn it off. The second video was a lot better, but Ramachandran's half was the most interesting contributuion to both the videos i watched. Learning the definition of the term aesthetics and Ramachandran deffinatly added 10x more depth for me to understand aesthetics.

First blog posting

1) The process to create a g-mail account is just as simple as it always was. I have had my g-mail account for a couple years now and it just keeps getting more advanced. Setting up the blogger was really simple i had thought.

2) In this course i expect to have a better understanding and appreciation of art in our society and how it has influenced people. Without art people would never be able to be express themselves.

3) I have taken about 4 online courses so far at Buffstate and this is my 5th. The courses are not too bad, but the work in extensive and it takes time to complete. You CANNOT half fast online courses.
